Alright, buckle up, because I just saw a movie that completely blew my mind! Seriously, I'm still buzzing. From the very first scene, I was absolutely hooked, and it didn't let go until the credits rolled. The story? Oh my gosh, the story! It was so clever and well-crafted. It had twists and turns I never saw coming, but it all made perfect sense in the end. It was like a puzzle that slowly came together, and every piece was perfectly placed. You know when a movie makes you think? This one definitely did that. It wasn't just mindless action or fluff; it had real substance. And the characters! They were so real and relatable. I felt like I knew them, like I was right there with them on their journey. They had depth, they had flaws, they had moments that made me laugh, and moments that made me want to cry. I was completely invested in what happened to them. The actors did an amazing job bringing them to life. You could feel their emotions through the screen. Visually, it was stunning. The way it was shot, the colors, the sets – everything was just beautiful. It wasn't just pretty to look at, though; it also added to the story and the mood. Some scenes were so powerful, they'll stay with me for a long time. The music was also perfect! It really enhanced the emotions and made everything even more impactful. Honestly, I can't think of a single thing I didn't like about this movie. It had everything: a great story, amazing characters, beautiful visuals, and a fantastic soundtrack. It made me feel so many different things, and it left me thinking long after it was over. If you're looking for a movie that will take you on a journey and leave you completely satisfied, this is it. Trust me, you won't be disappointed! It's a 10/10 masterpiece in my book!Alright, buckle up, because I just saw a movie that completely blew my mind! Seriously, I'm still buzzing. Who doesn’t like a white woolly llama? Well that’s probably the highlight of this derivative CGI-fest that finds a quartet of geeks and gamers dragged through a magical portal to a world ruled by the evil “Malgosha”. Now she wants to use this glowing cube to escape from her dark and dingy “Overworld” realm and take over the peaceable and colourful real-world but she hasn’t banked on the tenacity of former gaming champion “Garrett” (Jason Momoa) and the geeky “Henry” (Sebastian Hansen) who reunite with the long trapped “Steve” (Jack Black) to save the day and the world. You don’t really need to know much about the video game to appreciate the simplicity of this, but then again I’m note sure you’d need to be much over 5 to appreciate it either. The visuals are engagingly 1980s with some references that did remind me a bit of “Back to the Future” (1985) meets “Dungeons & Dragons” and a decent soundtrack that allows Black to get straight into his element and prove that it is possible to entertain amidst what was undoubtedly (for him) a sea of green! Momoa isn’t afraid to send himself up both Danielle Brooks and Sebastian Henry seem to be ready to immerse themselves in this once in a lifetime opportunity to be in a big-budget movie without really having any lines to learn, cues to make or long sessions in the make up chair. As ever with these weakly written fantasies, the denouement is never in jeopardy but with so much enthusiasm on the screen for something that was, for many, an integral part of their growing up it’s difficult to be overly critical of something so shamelessly sentimental. What it isn’t, though, is funny and the laughs are few and far between so I think it’s best to just aim low and let the whole tide of your adolescence (if you are old enough) to wash over you before you leave the cinema, completely forget all about this and hope there isn’t a sequel.Who doesn’t like a white woolly llama? ⸻ I was really disappointed by the movie and I was even more surprised that Jack Black agreed to take on such a role It just didn’t fit him at all and it honestly brought down his image in my eyes. The script was weak and the story was not good either. Overall I think it was a poor choice for Jack Black, considering I usually see him as a great actor The movie definitely doesn’t deserve more than a 4 out of 10.⸻ I was really disappointed by the movie and I was even more surprised that Jack Black agreed to take on such a role It just didn’t fit him at all and it honestly brought down his image in my eyes. **As a child, i yearned for the mines**, and this movie encapsulates this energy perfectly. Back on my little farm, my **chickens** would have to **jog** **Key** West, Florida every day! And that's why I could **the never** go in the mines. But now, this movie has come to cushion my fall with it's **Water Bucket, released**. Oh yea all of that up above. I didnt live on a farm as a child but i did yearn for the mines. Anyway movie was very funny so yea. some of the models are weird too. Anyways, 6.5/10.**As a child, i yearned for the mines**, and this movie encapsulates this energy perfectly. 'A Minecraft Movie' is, eh, a great time? I'm genuinely taken aback by how much I actually enjoyed this one. All 101 minutes are extremely stupid and silly, but they lean into it so much that I happily managed to look past it. It entertained me, what can I say? I did play Minecraft growing up but only casually, though I did admittedly heavily watch YouTubers play it (s/o Mindcrack, CaptainSparklez, ChimneySwift11 lmao). Personally, I was more a superflat, creative world type of guy, the amount of time I wasted (nay, embraced) building 'true to life' cities... good times. Despite not being super into the game's inner workings, I still picked up plenty of calls to the game which is fun. The world itself here feels fun and vibrant, they take some creative license but it only turns out positive. Based on early shots I saw pre-release, I didn't like the look but in actuality the animation is excellent. The humour is strong too, I was chuckling all the way through - rather unexpectedly. Much of the comedy is played for adults as well, I would've predicted it'd be more directly for kids; not that there's anything crazy in this, but it's not super dumbed down, which is pleasant. It all has a pulse, that's for sure. Jack Black is funny, he fully commits to the role of Steve and, for me, it ended up being somewhat of a perfect performance to be honest; no-one would've bettered Black. I wasn't actually sold when I heard the casting, so I'm glad I was wrong. Jason Momoa is the same, especially after seeing trailers. Momoa is very good in this, as are the whole cast in truth. Sebastian Hansen, Emma Myers and Danielle Brooks are all pluses. Rachel House brings strong voice work, while Jennifer Coolidge (and Hiram Garcia) have solid smaller parts too. A cast that surpassed my (admittedly aimless) expectations. In fact, that last sentence just about sums up my overall thoughts on this 2025 release. I'm sure I should not have liked this as much as I did, but here we are! If you told me hours ago that I'd be giving it this rating, I'd have called you an absolute nutter. Based on the general reaction I'm seeing, I should probably keep my thoughts on this quiet. I am susceptible to a supposed bad movie every now and then, leave me alone. Mind you, many others do agree with me so... goat video game adaptation?!'A Minecraft Movie' is, eh, a great time? I'm genuinely taken aback by how much I actually enjoyed this one. ## **A Minecraft Movie (2025) Review: A Surprisingly Solid, Unabashedly Fun Adventure - 8/10** Going into a video game adaptation as iconic and abstract as *Minecraft* with zero prior knowledge is a unique experience. Stripped of any expectations about lore or mechanics, *A Minecraft Movie* stands on its own as a winsome, well-crafted family adventure film. It is, at its heart, a charming bit of silly fun built on a foundation of surprisingly solid storytelling. The film wisely avoids getting bogged down in complex mythology. Instead, it embraces a classic hero’s journey: an ordinary person (or"Steve") is transported to a world of blocky, cube-based landscapes and must learn the rules of survival, forge alliances with its quirky inhabitants, and face a looming, pixelated threat to restore balance. The plot is straightforward but effective, leveraging universal themes of creativity, cooperation, and courage over one’s fears. The emotional beats land with sincerity, and the character arcs, while simple, are satisfying. Visually, the movie is a bold and successful gamble. The decision to render the world in a stylized, high-fidelity version of the game’s signature aesthetic is gorgeous. It creates a cohesive, immersive fantasy realm that feels both fantastical and tactile. The humor is broad and physical, playing well with the world’s inherent silliness, and the action sequences are inventive, using the game’s simple tools—mining, building, crafting—in clever and cinematic ways. ### The Verdict **8/10 - A Delightful Surprise** Judged purely as a movie, *A Minecraft Movie* is a resounding success. It doesn’t try to be a profound epic; it aims to be an entertaining, heartfelt, and visually inventive adventure for all ages, and it hits that target perfectly. The **pretty solid storyline** provides more than enough narrative glue to hold the spectacle together, resulting in a film that is both a loving tribute to its source and a genuinely good time at the cinema for the uninitiated. A welcome dose of creative, uncynical fun.## **A Minecraft Movie (2025) Review: A Surprisingly Solid, Unabashedly Fun Adventure - 8/10** Going into a video game adaptation as iconic and abstract as *Minecraft* with zero prior knowledge is a unique experience. Hollywood’s video game genre is getting a box office redemption arc

Over the weekend, Mario, Luigi, Bowser, and the rest of Nintendo’s iconic crew traipsed around the solar system and smashed their way to the top of the box office in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie . It’s the latest sign that Hollywood and moviegoers have changed their tune on video game adaptations. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (a sequel to 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie ) opened on April 8, just in time for the lead-up to Easter weekend. According to studio estimates cited by CNBC , the Illumination and Nintendo co-production earned $130.9 million over the weekend and $190.1 million in its first five days in North American theaters. Tack on an estimated $182.4 million from overseas markets, and the film grossed around $372.5 million worldwide. It was a head-turning initial run that qualifies as the biggest box office debut since Avatar: Fire and Ash opened in 2025, and the second biggest for a movie based on a video game, trailing only The Super Mario Bros. Movie . More broadly, it’s another example in a recent series of financially lucrative video game movies—and it shows that the subgenre might be officially getting a box office redemption arc. An uphill battle for video game adaptations Less than a decade ago, video-game-to-movie adaptations were considered a gamble at best and a surefire road to fan disappointment at worst. Around the late 2010s, plenty of studios had tried their hands at a video game movie, but no one had seemed to quite turn the genre into a winning formula, despite its obvious potential for mining recognizable IP. Several memorable box office flops had soured audiences on the concept, including 1993’s catastrophic live-action Super Mario Bros. , the total bomb that was 2005’s Alone in the Dark , and 2016’s lackluster Assassin’s Creed . Other attempts, like 2016’s Warcraft , saw middling success in North American markets but stronger showings overseas. Box office hits like 2001’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and 2016’s The Angry Birds Movie were rare successes in a sea of underperforming brethren. One 2017 article in the Guardian addressed the elephant in the room head-on: “Movie adaptations of video games are still mostly terrible,” its headline read. “Why has no one cracked the code?” For every Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and The Angry Birds Movie there were an equal number of big flops, the story argued. “Studios clearly feel that the international box office returns are enough to justify the investment [but] they are all hoping to be the lucky winner to crack the code and become the next superhero-like genre to break out and generate billions of dollars,” Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst at Comscore, explained in the piece. “[It] just hasn’t happened, yet.” In recent years, that long-awaited breakout moment appears to have arrived. The great video game movie Renaissance Looking back, the first sign was 2019’s Pokémon Detective Pikachu . The film, starring a live-action Ryan Reynolds alongside an animated Pikachu, grossed about $433 million worldwide during its run in theaters, earning the spot as the largest video game movie debut of all time up until that point. For both studios and theaters, the movie served as proof that it was possible to successfully adapt beloved video game IP into something that both kids and parents would be interested in watching. Since then, it seems, the floodgates have officially opened. Sonic the Hedgehog has gotten three movie adaptations from 2020 to 2023, each of which was a major financial success. In 2023, The Super Mario Bros. Movie made more than $375 million around the world during its opening weekend and netted a whopping $1.36 billion after its full run. Most recently, in 2025, A Minecraft Movie not only scored nearly $1 billion worldwide, but also captured the cultural zeitgeist through a series of meme-able moments that turned every screening into a new marketing opportunity. Now, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie seems poised to be the next video-game-to-movie success story. Already, its broken box office records in 2026 and helped AMC to notch one of its most lucrative weekends of all time. “It’s exactly the kind of broad, crowd-pleasing release that brings people into theatres,” Adam Aron, AMC’s CEO, said of the film in a statement to ABC News. In 2017, Dergarabedian predicted that the video game film genre would need a “consistent string of hits” to justify it as a true blockbuster genre. And in 2026, that threshold is finally within reach. That’s not to say that all of these films will be critically acclaimed— A Minecraft Movie and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie both have sub-50% ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, for example—but when it comes to butts in seats, video game IP is paying off for Hollywood at last.
