The theatrical run of Masters of the Universe didn’t exactly unfold the way many fans or industry analysts expected. While the long-awaited adaptation brought He-Man and Eternia back to the big screen, its box office numbers fell well short of blockbuster territory. Under normal circumstances, that kind of performance would put any sequel plans on life support. But in today’s entertainment landscape, theatrical revenue is only part of the equation. Despite earning just $102.4 million worldwide against a reported $170 million production budget, Masters of the Universe may still have a path forward. According to reports, Amazon MGM Studios is evaluating the film through a much broader lens than ticket sales alone, which means the future of the franchise could depend just as much on streaming performance as its theatrical results. As the movie makes its transition to digital platforms and eventually Prime Video, Amazon has another opportunity to gauge audience interest. If the film finds a larger audience at home and helps drive subscriptions or viewer engagement, it could strengthen the case for continuing the story. That possibility has reportedly led to discussions of several different options for the franchise's future. Rather than committing to another massive theatrical production, Amazon could pursue a lower-budget sequel or even continue the story as a streaming-exclusive project. Amazon MGM Studios executive Kevin Wilson previously expressed confidence in the film's launch and the audience response it generated, saying: “This weekend represents a very solid start for Masters of the Universe and the passionate, multigenerational audience response we’re seeing around the world has been fantastic,” he said. Wilson added that the opening weekend supported the studio’s “holistic distribution strategy” and would help generate awareness beyond the theatrical window. That comment highlights how Amazon approaches major releases. Unlike traditional studios that depend heavily on theatrical profits, Amazon can also measure a project's value through its impact on the larger Prime Video ecosystem. The movie may have stumbled financially, but audiences have been considerably more supportive than critics. At the time of writing, Masters of the Universe holds a 68% critics score and an 86% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. That audience reaction could become a significant factor as the film reaches viewers who skipped it in theaters. There’s also another major reason fans shouldn't completely write off a sequel. The film planted the seeds for future stories with the introduction of Princess Adora, He-Man’s long-lost twin sister. Fans know Adora better as She-Ra, one of the most beloved characters in the entire franchise. Her arrival opens the door for an adaptation of storylines that helped expand the Masters of the Universe universe throughout the 1980s and beyond. Whether that leads to a direct sequel, a spin-off, or a streaming continuation remains to be seen. But if Amazon sees strong engagement once the movie arrives on Prime Video, the studio may decide that Eternia is still worth revisiting. For now, Masters of the Universe 2 remains far from a sure thing. Still, in an era where streaming metrics can carry as much weight as box office totals, the franchise's story may not be over just yet.
