Did You Know?

A deadly race to conquer K2 in winter reveals the dark side of extreme climbing

Amir Bar‑Lev’s new documentary, The Last First: Winter K2, pulls back the curtain on the high‑stakes business of extreme mountaineering. The film follows Icelandic prodigy John Snorri Sigurjonsson and the Pakistani father‑son duo Ali and Sajid Sadpara as they chase a historic first: scaling K2 in the dead of winter. Bar‑Lev stitches together extraordinarily intimate footage that captures the raw tension between ego, heroism and greed on the world’s second‑tallest peak. The climbers’ personal ambitions clash with the unforgiving power of the mountain, turning every step into a life‑or‑death gamble. Beyond the summit quest, the documentary exposes how commercial pressures are reshaping the sport, turning perilous ascents into spectacles for profit. With its stark visuals and unflinching storytelling, Winter K2 offers a chilling look at what drives—and endangers—those who chase the ultimate high. Streaming now on Apple TV.
