Jim Carrey Is Back For Sonic The Hedgehog 4, With Big Stars In Tow
As the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog 4 movie ramps up production , we finally have official confirmation that Jim Carrey (among other stars) is returning to the franchise, and he'll be joined by other prolific Hollywood actors new to the series. Per Variety (and initially reported by DanielRPK ), Carrey will don the mustache and goggles yet again as Dr. Robotnik, Variety also reported that Idris Elba (Knuckles), Keanu Reeves (Shadow), Colleen O’Shaughnessey (Tails), James Marsden (Tom Wachowski), Tika Sumpter (Maddie Wachowski), and Lee Majdoub (Agent Stone) are returning as well. Additionally, Ben Kingsley and Nick Offerman are voicing characters, while Matt Berry and Richard Ayoade also join the cast. Ben Schwartz is back as the eponymous blue blur himself, while Kristen Bell voices Amy Rose . An official"title reveal" video features images of returning characters Sonic, Dr. Robotnik, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, and the Wachowskis, while an orchestral take of the Sonic CD theme song"Sonic Boom" plays in the background. The video puts quite a focus on Bell's Amy Rose (and her hammer) and implies that Metal Sonic will be the movie's villain. Quite obviously, the title is revealed to be ..."Sonic the Hedgehog 4." It's unknown which characters the newly announced cast members will portray, but Variety specifically mentions that Kingsley and Offerman are part of the film's voice cast. We're already imagining Ron Swanson's voice coming out of a CGI Big the Cat. It's hard to think of an existing Sonic character that Kingsley would be a good fit for--it's not yet known whether Metal Sonic will be a speaking role or not, but such a part wouldn't be too huge of a surprise from the Academy Award winner who also appeared in the adaptations of Bloodrayne and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Carrey, who was bizarrely suspected of having been impersonated at a recent awards ceremony , has previously stated in the past few years that he was retired, but he admitted to returning for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (in which he also played Gerald Robotnik) because he"bought a lot of stuff" and"needed the money, frankly." After the release of the third film, he stated that he was open to returning for a fourth , even though the fate of his character was ambiguous by that film's end. Sonic the Hedgehog 4 will hit theaters on March 19, 2027, with an untitled"Sonic Universe Event Film" spin-off slated for a December 2028 release.
