Spa Weekend (2026)

Composer Philip White set out to craft a spa‑like soundscape that feels contemporary without slipping into obvious Caribbean or country tropes. He leaned on subtle pedal‑steel voicings and brushed away the temptation to use steel drums, instead weaving in modern synth textures that reflect what middle‑aged women might actually be listening to today. The infamous hand‑massage sequence became a three‑part musical experiment. White first nods to Sade with a tongue‑in‑cheek line, “Oh God, I feel like I’m in a Sade video,” then escalates into an emotionally intense middle section before culminating in a full‑on, “70s‑style porn‑music” climax. The team ultimately decided to lean into the over‑the‑top vibe, letting the music amplify the scene’s erotic humor. White argues that comedy scoring is a whole different beast from drama. “You don’t want to step on anybody’s delivery,” he says, noting that music must land jokes precisely and then disappear, a level of beat‑by‑beat calibration far beyond the broader palettes used in dramatic scores. Having cut his teeth across fantasy, horror, action and drama since 2006, White finds the tightrope of comedic timing both challenging and rewarding. When the jokes land, he says, “the comedy just comes alive,” a testament to the meticulous finessing that makes Spa Weekend’s humor sing.

Director-writer duo Jon Lucas and Scott Moore return with"Spa Weekend," a 2026 comedy that positions itself as a spiritual successor to their hit"Bad Moms." The film follows four childhood best friends—Jane (Leslie Mann), Coco (Michelle Buteau), Sophie (Anna Faris), and Mel (Isla Fisher)—as they seek inner peace at the posh Solaris Resort. The group dynamic is immediately tested when the first three friends, weary of Mel's history as a habitual troublemaker, deliberately exclude her from their birthday celebration, only for people-pleaser Sophie to quietly reverse course and extend an invitation. Upon her arrival, Mel brings a margarita-making machine and a suitcase of sex toys, instantly disrupting the women's attempts at meditation and mud baths. The chaos escalates as Mel destroys a crystal display and performs donuts on the resort's manicured lawns in a golf cart while being chased by security. Amidst the destruction, the film attempts to weave in romantic subplots, including Jane's budding connection with hunky Aussie yoga instructor Kai (Adam Demos) and a rekindled attraction between Coco and her ex-husband following a damaging mud fight. The R-rated comedy, which runs for 1 hour and 37 minutes, leans heavily on bawdy humor and"spa-rampaging goats" from a yoga class. Critics have noted that while the cast includes comedy heavyweights, the script relies on tired antics and two-dimensional characters, resulting in a film that prioritizes fluff over the sharp, empowering tone of its predecessors.
