The witchy sequel that’s stirring up love‑and‑hate vibes

Nearly three decades after the original flopped, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman return as the Owens sisters in Practical Magic 2, now joined by newcomers Maisie Williams and Joey King as Sally’s daughters. The story drifts from New England to a chilly London backdrop, where the family’s curse and magical abilities resurface amid a quest for midnight margaritas. Critics are split. The film lands at a modest 36% on Rotten Tomatoes, with SlashFilm’s Witney Seibold slamming it as “staggeringly unfunny” and AV Club’s Anna McKibbin handing it a D‑, citing an “antiseptic harshness” and a script tangled in contrivances. Variety’s Todd Gilchrist calls the 130‑minute sequel “overlong, predictable,” noting it repeats the original’s beats without improvement. Not everyone is unimpressed. IndieWire’s Alison Foreman awards a B+, praising the sheer joy of watching Kidman and Bullock together and highlighting the film’s celebration of aging as gaining power. The Wrap’s Amelia Emberwing acknowledges the flaws but calls the movie a “fantastical reunion” that delivers enough charm to keep viewers reaching for a margarita. Whether you’re drawn by nostalgia or the promise of witchy whimsy, Practical Magic 2 hits theaters on Friday, September 11. The mixed reviews may tempt you to decide for yourself—grab a midnight margarita and see if the sequel casts a spell on you.

A 30‑million‑dollar spell: Practical Magic 2 tops the box office and ends Spider‑Man’s reign

The Warner Bros. sequel starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman opened at the top of the North American box‑office this weekend, pulling in an estimated $30 million from 4,146 theaters. The surprise hit knocked the long‑running superhero juggernaut Spider‑Man: Brand New Day out of first place and added roughly $16 million from 77 overseas markets, for a worldwide debut of about $46 million – right at the low end of the studio’s $30‑$35 million forecast. Nearly three decades after the original Practical Magic became a cult favorite, the follow‑up finally returns the Owens sisters to the screen. Bullock and Kidman reprise their roles as Sally and Gillian, now battling an ancestral curse that haunts their love lives. The film also introduces a younger generation of witches, played by Joey King and Maisie Williams, with Lee Pace joining the cast. Adapted from Alice Hoffman’s work, the sequel leans on the chemistry of its veteran leads while expanding the family’s magical legacy. Critical response has been mixed – The Associated Press gave the film two out of four stars, noting that it sacrifices some of the original’s campy charm but is buoyed by Bullock and Kidman’s performances. Senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian of Rentrak says the real test will be next weekend, when the movie faces little direct competition. He predicts that “Weekend two will tell the tale,” as audiences continue to treat theaters like a streaming service, seeking a diverse mix of genres and star power.

Margaritas on set? The booze‑busting truth behind Practical Magic 2

When Joey King and Maisie Williams hit the press circuit for Practical Magic 2, the inevitable question about the film’s infamous midnight margarita scene sparked a surprising confession: while on‑set drinking is technically illegal, the cast was definitely sipping off‑set. King laughed that “we were drinking margaritas definitely off set,” a revelation that shines a light on a long‑standing Hollywood taboo. The saga isn’t new. Legend has it that Nicole Kidman snuck real tequila onto the original Practical Magic set for the final midnight margarita shot, and director Griffin Dunne apparently joined in, admitting he was “quite shit‑faced” by the end of filming. Today, SAG‑AFTRA and Backstage both discourage real alcohol on set for safety and performance reasons, even if the policy isn’t spelled out in a public rulebook. Despite the ban, the cast still gets their fix during promotion. Williams jokes that people keep bringing them “truth juice,” while King confirms they’re handed “real margs” on the press tour. The anecdote sits alongside other notorious on‑set drinking tales—from George Clooney’s drunken turn on One Fine Day to Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler’s party‑filled Wet Hot American Summer schedule—underscoring how the line between performance and party can blur. The broader conversation also touches on darker side effects: allegations that producers have pressured stars like Leah McSweeney and Renée Zellweger into drinking, sometimes with harmful consequences. While the margarita myth adds a sparkle to Practical Magic 2’s marketing, the industry’s cautious stance on alcohol remains a protective measure for its talent.

Maisie Williams Played ‘Practical Magic 2’ Character As “Sapphic Icon” Despite Sequel Omitting Book’s LGBTQ Plot
Image via deadline.com,

Maisie Williams’ secret sapphic spin on Antonia finally surfaces in Practical Magic 2

In the new Warner Bros. sequel, Maisie Williams reveals she approached Antonia Owens as a lesbian, a facet that the film never explicitly confirms. Speaking to Gay Times, Williams said she kept Antonia as a "sapphic icon," noting how this perspective reshaped the character’s interactions, especially when discussing the boyfriend Gideon. The decision to leave Antonia’s queer romance off‑screen marks a stark departure from Alice Hoffman’s 2021 novel, which gives the Owens sister a love interest named Ariel, a lawyer who helps untangle the family curse, and even a pregnancy storyline. Critics point out that the movie sacrifices this rich backstory, focusing instead on Kylie’s love story and the broader curse narrative. Fans are already buzzing about the possibility of a third installment. Sandra Bullock hinted to Vanity Fair that a Practical Magic 3 could happen, promising to "pass the torch" to the younger generation if the sequel proves successful. The lingering question remains: will future films finally give Antonia the romance she deserves?

Maisie Williams On 'Practical Magic 2' Role's Omitted LGBTQ Plot
Image via headtopics.com,

The sequel sidelines Antonia’s lesbian storyline—what was lost?

Practical Magic 2 leans heavily into Kylie’s romance with her comatose boyfriend Gideon, but in doing so it trims away much of Antonia Owens’ rich LGBTQ backstory that fans loved in the 2021 novel. The book revealed Antonia as a lesbian, pairing her with a lawyer named Ariel and even hinting at a pregnancy with her best friend’s baby—details that never made it onto the screen. Hudson Williams, who reprises Antonia, says she approached the role “as a sapphic icon,” insisting that her character’s perspective on men was shaped by her sexuality. “I love that. I think it brought a real joy to the scenes when we would be talking about Gideon, because Antonia just has a completely different perspective on men altogether,” she explained, noting the many script edits that ultimately left her queer arc under‑explored. The omission has sparked speculation about whether the franchise will revisit Antonia’s love life in a possible third installment. Sandra Bullock hinted at a trilogy if the sequel performs well, leaving fans hopeful that the next film might finally give Antonia the romance she deserves. Meanwhile, the film still delivers the familiar Owens magic, with Bullock and Nicole Kidman back as sisters Sally and Gillian, racing to England to break a centuries‑old family curse. But for many viewers, the loss of Antonia’s authentic queer narrative is a noticeable gap in an otherwise nostalgic revival.

Why Sally’s memory‑wipe in Practical Magic 2 feels like the sequel’s biggest misstep

The new sequel opens with a grim twist—detective Gary Hallet (Aidan Quinn) is dead, and Sally Owens, still haunted by the Owens curse, once again uses magic to erase her daughters’ memories of witchcraft. The move mirrors her earlier attempt after her husband’s death, but this time it feels harsher, wiping not only the magical knowledge but also the warm family moments tied to it. Fans and critics alike are baffled by the logic: by the film’s end, the whole town embraces the Owens women as beloved witches, even clearing them of murder. Yet Sally still decides to strip Kylie and Antonia of every recollection, raising the question of why the girls don’t simply remember the town’s open‑handed admiration or the infamous rooftop‑floating scene that made the original so iconic. Despite the glaring plot hole, Practical Magic 2 is resonating with audiences craving nostalgia. The sequel leans into the original’s charm, delivering the same cozy, magical vibe while hinting at more stories from the book series. While reviewers are split, viewers are finding comfort in the familiar spell‑casting and family dynamics. The debate over Sally’s decision may spark talk of another follow‑up, especially as the source material still offers fresh material. Until then, fans might wish they could cast a spell of their own to forget the confusing memory‑wipe, just as the reviewer jokes they’re tempted to do while writing this piece.

Joey King silences the critics and even wins over the original Practical Magic star

In a candid appearance on Dax Shepard’s “Armchair Expert,” the 27‑year‑old actress brushed off the wave of online backlash surrounding her casting in Practical Magic 2. King said she’s learned to let both praise and vitriol roll off her shoulders, focusing instead on the rewarding roles she still lands and the happy life she leads. The controversy stems from King stepping into the shoes of Kylie Owens, a role first played by Evan Rachel Wood in the 1998 cult classic. King explained that the sequel, adapted from Alice Hoffman’s second novel Book of Magic, follows the characters at a specific post‑college age, necessitating a fresh cast. She also noted that the role of Antonia Owens has been handed to Maisie Williams, while original co‑star Alexandra Artrip voiced her own surprise at the recasting. Despite the criticism, Wood reached out with unexpected support. After a brief Instagram story jab, she praised King for being the only one from the original film who contacted her, calling her a “sweetheart.” King, in turn, responded to a TikTok detractor by urging fans to keep an open mind and enjoy the movie, emphasizing her own admiration for the original. Even Sandra Bullock reflected on the original’s muted reception, but noted the renewed enthusiasm surrounding the sequel’s September 11 premiere. The combined goodwill from Wood, Bullock, and King’s own resilience suggests Practical Magic 2 may finally cast the spell that the first film never quite managed.

Why a $22 ticket turned a cozy sequel into a pricey theater gamble

When the author finally squeezed a day off to see Practical Magic 2, she discovered that the only available seats were in a premium format that cost almost $22—nearly three times the price of a regular $7 showing. With three of the four smaller screenings already sold out, the pair were forced to shell out the higher price just to catch the sequel on a Wednesday night. Only eight moviegoers ended up paying for that premium experience, while three other screenings that night were completely booked, even front‑row seats. The author argues that the steep price likely turned away a broader audience who might have opted for streaming instead, suggesting the theater could have filled more seats with a more reasonable ticket cost. The piece also puts the pricing dilemma in context, noting that blockbuster tentpoles like Spider‑Man: Brand New Day and Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil can command inflated ticket prices and still draw crowds. In contrast, a modest, folksy sequel like Practical Magic 2 doesn’t need a giant screen to shine, and the high premium price may have actually hurt its box‑office potential. Ultimately, the writer calls for a better system that balances theater revenue needs with affordable access, especially for films that aren’t visual spectacles but rely on charm and story. Otherwise, fans risk paying “the wazoo” for an experience that might have been just as enjoyable—if not more so—on a standard screen.

Your Halloween binge just got magical—‘Practical Magic 2’ lands online on Oct 13!

Warner Bros. finally lifted the veil on the sequel’s digital debut, announcing that ‘Practical Magic 2’ will hit streaming platforms on October 13. The news dropped on the film’s Instagram feed with a cheeky “Tell your coven” caption, giving fans just enough time to add the witchy sequel to their Halloween watchlist. The October rollout follows the film’s theatrical premiere on September 11, where Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman reprised their roles as the Owens sisters. After the digital window, the movie is expected to appear for rent or purchase on services like Prime Video and Apple TV, before eventually sliding onto HBO Max and the HBO cable channel—though Warner Bros. hasn’t set those dates yet. For collectors, a physical release is slated for December 1, offering Blu‑ray, 4K UHD and DVD editions packed with bonus material. Extras include cast interviews, a deep dive into the folklore that inspired the story, behind‑the‑scenes looks at props and VFX, and a special segment on how the iconic house was rebuilt for the sequel. With the digital drop just days before Halloween, it’s the perfect time to revisit the Owens sisters’ spell‑binding saga.
