Did You Know?
Sheep solve murders and climb streaming charts—Hugh Jackman’s latest is a woolly whodunit you won’t want to miss!
Hugh Jackman’s off‑beat mystery The Sheep Detectives has made a surprising leap back into the U.S. streaming Top 10, climbing nine spots to land at No. 10 on JustWatch’s daily movie chart. The quirky murder‑mystery, now streaming on Prime Video after its initial hit on the platform, is proving that a shepherd‑turned‑detective can still draw an audience.
The film follows George Hardy (Jackman), a shepherd who reads detective novels to his flock each night—until a strange incident forces the sheep themselves to pick up the magnifying glass. As the woolly sleuths sniff out clues and interrogate human suspects, they demonstrate that even the most unlikely investigators can crack a case.
Helmed by Kyle Balda, the director of Minions: The Rise of Gru, and scripted by Craig Mazin—best known for Chernobyl—the movie adapts Leonie Swann’s novel Three Bags Full. With Jackman’s charismatic turn at the helm and a premise that blends absurdity with classic whodunit intrigue, The Sheep Detectives is a delightfully bizarre addition to the streaming lineup.
Hugh Jackman's shepherd comedy climbs back into Prime Video’s Top 10
After months on Prime Video, Hugh Jackman's quirky murder‑mystery, The Sheep Detectives, has surged nine spots to re‑enter the U.S. streaming Top 10, landing at number 10 on JustWatch’s daily chart. The unexpected boost shows that the film’s odd premise—turning a flock of sheep into sleuths—still captures viewers’ curiosity despite a modest marketing push.
Directed by Kyle Balda of Minions fame and scripted by Craig Mazin, the Chernobyl creator, the adaptation of Leonie Swann’s bestseller Three Bags Full blends humor, suspense, and heartfelt animal companionship. Jackman's understated charm as shepherd George Hardy, who reads detective novels to his flock, anchors the family‑friendly mystery and highlights the surprising investigative talents of even the most unassuming livestock.
The film’s climb underscores a growing appetite for genre‑bending, animation‑style storytelling on streaming platforms. By pairing a seasoned action star with a writer known for dark dramas, producers have crafted a novelty that resonates across ages, hinting that future in‑house content may follow suit, pairing familiar faces with wildly inventive premises.
Hugh Jackman's sheep‑sleuth mystery is still stealing the spotlight on Prime Video three months after debut
The murder‑mystery romp The Sheep Detectives burst onto Prime Video on June 24 and quickly claimed the No. 1 spot among movies in the United States. Remarkably, it has lingered in Amazon’s worldwide Prime Original Top 10 through the week of September 7‑13, a rare feat for a streaming title that usually fades after its launch week.
The film leans on a heavyweight ensemble: Hugh Jackman returns as detective George, flanked by Nicholas Braun of Succession, Nicholas Galitzine from Red, White and Royal Blue, and seasoned talents Emma Thompson, Hong Chau and Molly Gordon. Adding a layer of absurd charm, the flock’s voices are supplied by a star‑studded roster that includes Julia Louis‑Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Chris O'Dowd, Regina Hall, Patrick Stewart, Bella Ramsey and Brett Goldstein, turning the animal characters into a celebrity‑laden chorus.
Adapted from Leonie Swann’s novel, the picture is directed by Kyle Balda—known for his work on Minions: The Rise of Gru—and benefits from the executive production of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the duo behind Project Hail Mary. Their combined pedigree in animation and genre‑blending gives the story a polished visual style and broad appeal, helping the movie build a steady audience long after its initial release.
Talking sheep solve a murder in the coziest Halloween whodunit
The Sheep Detectives swaps blood‑curdling screams for bleating sleuths, delivering a mystery comedy where a flock of sheep teams up to crack the murder of their beloved shepherd George, played by Hugh Jackman. The unlikely investigators—voiced by Julia Louis‑Dreyfus, Chris O'Dowd, and Bryan Cranston—bring a blend of wit and heart as they out‑smart a bumbling small‑town cop (Nicholas Braun) and an eager would‑be reporter (Nicholas Galitzine).
Set against the warm, autumn‑tinted backdrop of an English village, the film leans into classic whodunit tropes while weaving in themes of grief, letting go, and loss. Supporting talent like Hong Chau, Molly Gordon, and Emma Thompson round out the human cast, adding layers of humor and emotional depth.
Director Amazon MGM Studios balances clever dialogue with a comforting visual palette, proving that a Halloween movie doesn’t need to be terrifying to be perfect for the season. Whether you’re after a light‑hearted laugh or a story with a surprisingly poignant message, The Sheep Detectives offers a uniquely charming alternative to the usual horror fare.
