Beware Boiúna Director Mike P. Nelson on Amazon Snake Horror Film
Image via headtopics.com,

A giant Amazon snake meets gritty, character‑driven horror – and the jungle itself becomes a relentless antagonist.

Mike P. Nelson didn’t sign on to "Beware Boiúna" for the monster alone; he wanted a survival story that puts real people in the crosshairs of an ancient predator. With Kiana Madeira, Jessica Rothe and Logan Marshall‑Green leading a medical mission gone awry, the director says the cast’s instinct and nuance keep the tension grounded even as the colossal snake, Boiña, awakens to claim its domain. Nelson’s love‑letter to classic horror – citing "Sorcerer," "Jaws," "Alien," "Tremors" and "Jurassic Park" – shows up in the film’s relentless tone. He insisted the characters be fully fleshed before the serpent slithered onto screen, turning the creature feature into a gritty, heart‑pounding man‑versus‑nature thriller where every decision can mean life or death. Filming took place entirely in Colombia’s unforgiving jungle, from Leticia on the Amazon River to the remote woods around Girardot. The crew wrestled with sudden rainstorms that washed away sets, a river that rose overnight to swallow a dock, and a 20‑foot‑deep trench that doubled as an outdoor tank for a massive boat stunt. Despite the heat, water, and constant battle with the elements, Nelson says the jungle’s raw authenticity shaped the movie’s harsh, grounded atmosphere – and he’d return in a heartbeat.

Beware Boiúna Stars Kiana Madeira and Jessica Rothe on Amazon Snake Horror

A real‑life Amazon nightmare fuels Lionsgate’s snake terror, from botfly gore to mud‑soaked stunts

Filming Beware Boiça took the cast deep into the Amazon rainforest, turning a bucket‑list dream into a gritty, on‑location shoot. Jessica Rothe praised director Mike P. Nelson’s collaborative spirit, noting that the jungle’s unforgiving terrain replaced any soundstage, while Logan Marshall‑Green’s addition raised the excitement for the ensemble. One of the film’s most talked‑about moments is a visceral botfly extraction, where Rothe’s character Alli dives into the grotesque with a Dr. Pimple Popper enthusiasm. The practical prosthetics, blood and pus were crafted by a dedicated effects crew, delivering a scene that promises to make audiences squirm. Kiana Madeira’s mud‑filled fall showcases the physical challenges of jungle filmmaking. While her stunt double Angie performed the backward plunge into thick, suffocating mud—far denser than water—Madeira described the claustrophobic ordeal of mud flooding her nose and the lingering terror of resurfacing. Even the colossal snake Boiça was hinted at with on‑set tricks. The crew moved a massive HVAC tube through the woods and rustled trees to give actors a tangible point of focus, allowing them to react authentically to a creature that will later be rendered in post‑production. These practical cues amplify the suspense, ensuring viewers never see the whole serpent at once, only its terrifying fragments.

'Boiúna' stars Rothe and Madeira embrace Scream Queen label

Jessica Rothe and Kiana Madeira dive into the Amazon’s darkest legend – and they love the Scream Queen title

Jessica Rothe (Happy Death Day) and Kiana Madeira (Fear Street) proudly wear the Scream Queen badge as they face the mythic snake Boiála in the new jungle‑terror Beware Boiúna. The duo, playing a doctor and a boat worker on a desperate search through the Amazon, say the title lets them embrace the raw, messy, and ugly side of horror that they both crave. Director Mike P. Nelson took the cast deep into Colombia’s rainforest, where the heat, swarms of insects and the sheer enormity of the foliage became part of the performance. Rothe notes that feeling the “big, alive, unknown, beautiful and terrifying” forest helped channel the creature’s own qualities, while Madeira recalls plunging into a specially‑made mud—infused with collagen—that felt like a “rush of adrenaline” as it splashed up her nose. Beyond the scares, the production was welcomed by local indigenous communities. Rothe describes a ceremony where they offered fruit and cards, and a shaman blessed the crew with scented oils and water, setting a respectful tone for the shoot. Off‑set, the cast joined the crew for salsa dancing, learning that in Colombian courting, a shared dance can be the true test of chemistry. Rothe also hinted at a possible return to the Happy Death Day franchise, saying she’s already brainstorming ideas on a Google doc. Whether she revisits that time‑loop world next year or at sixty, fans can expect her to keep delivering the kind of scream‑filled, high‑energy horror she’s become known for.

Beware Boiúna backdrop

A giant snake isn’t the only thing that’ll make you squirm in “Beware Boiúna.”

Director Mike P. Nelson says the film’s most memorable gross‑out moment has nothing to do with the mythic 100‑foot serpent prowling the Amazon, but with a real‑life parasite: a botfly larva. In the practical‑effects set piece, Jessica Rothe’s character Alli extracts prosthetic “worms” from Will Close’s back while tubes pump faux pus, clear fluid and thick blood onto the set, giving the scene a visceral, skin‑crawling realism that even the crew admits makes them shudder. Nelson’s fascination with the botfly—an actual parasite that can lodge under human skin in tropical regions—led him to make the extraction a centerpiece of the movie’s horror. He notes that botflies are far more common than giant snakes, turning a seemingly exotic threat into a universal dread for anyone daring to trek into the rainforest. Beyond the gruesome bug, “Beware Boiúna” pits a group of explorers against the legendary Amazonian serpent Boiúna, a massive snake that protects the jungle. The film stars Jessica Rothe, fresh from “Happy Death Day 3,” alongside Kiana Madeira of the “Fear Street” saga and horror veteran Logan Marshall‑Green. It marks Nelson’s fourth feature—following “The Domestics,” “Wrong Turn,” and “Silent Night, Deadly Night”—and lands him the next “Saw” installment with Blumhouse and Atomic Monster. Fans can catch the practical‑effects nightmare and the mythic monster in theaters now, just as the horror calendar fills up with a slew of 2026 releases.

A giant snake slithers onto the big screen, but it’s the characters you’ll really fear—

Mike P. Nelson, the filmmaker behind recent horror revivals like 2021’s “Wrong Turn” and 2025’s “Silent Night, Deadly Night,” is back this October with a new creature feature that promises more than just a monstrous reptile. Titled “Beware Boiúna,” the Lionsgate release pits a giant, fanged serpent against a trio of well‑drawn protagonists, giving the audience time to connect with the humans before the terror truly strikes. The cast is anchored by rising star Kiana Madeira, horror‑seasoned Jessica Rothe, and veteran Logan Marshall‑Green. According to the preview, the film deliberately spends its early minutes fleshing out these characters, building relationships and backstories that make the snake’s eventual on‑screen assault feel personal and unsettling. It’s a rare move for a creature movie that often dives straight into the scares. Nelson’s track record of breathing fresh life into familiar horror formulas suggests “Beware Boiúna” could be a standout in the October lineup. With Lionsgate backing the project, fans can expect a blend of practical effects and tension‑filled set pieces that honor classic monster cinema while delivering the modern character depth that horror audiences have come to crave.
