Did You Know?
Rosalina’s galaxy‑wide debut: why fans say she deserved the spotlight
Original Rosalina voice actress Mercedes Rose took to Twitter to praise Brie Larson’s turn in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, but she couldn’t hide her disappointment that the character got far too little screen time. Rose, who voiced the star‑guardian from 2007‑2010, joked that she wishes the role had been hers, underscoring a lingering fan desire to see more of the beloved cosmic figure.
Despite a lukewarm 42% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film proved a box‑office juggernaut, pulling in over $1 billion worldwide and earning an impressive 87% audience score. GamesRadar+ gave it three stars, noting that while the movie’s relentless energy and creativity push it beyond its predecessor, the story feels undercooked, especially in its handling of Rosalina’s role.
The movie also tossed a surprising twist into the Mario mythos: Rosalina and Princess Peach are revealed as sisters, reshaping long‑standing lore for fans. Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri highlighted the unique collaboration with Shigeru Miyamoto’s team as a key to the franchise’s success, marking a first for the studio in co‑creating with Nintendo’s creators.
Mario rockets to a billion‑dollar box‑office triumph in 2026’s video‑game movie boom
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie topped the year’s video‑game adaptation roundup, not just for its ambitious interstellar setting but for shattering the $1 billion worldwide mark. Even though critics were split, the film’s commercial pull outstripped its mixed reviews, making it the standout hit among titles like Mortal Kombat II and the new Street Fighter.
The ranking that placed Mario’s galaxy‑spanning adventure at the summit evaluated filmmaking craft, entertainment value, and how well each movie captured the spirit of its source game. While Mortal Kombat II delivered the tournament action fans craved and Street Fighter arrived with a massive cast, neither could match Mario’s box‑office fireworks.
Beyond the marquee names, 2026 also saw daring adaptations of niche titles—Markiplier’s indie horror Iron Lung and Japan’s Exit 8 turned obscure games into surprising cinematic successes. Yet it was Mario’s universal appeal that cemented the year as a watershed moment for video‑game movies, proving that even mixed‑review fare can dominate the global market.
