CLAYFACE Enlists Academy Award-Winning DUNE: PROPHECY and CONCLAVE Composer Volker Bertelmann
DC Studios’ upcoming Clayface movie just added another killer creative talent to the mix. Academy Award-winning composer Volker Bertelmann has officially signed on to score the dark DC horror film, and he’s a perfect fit for the strange and unsettling world this movie is building. According to Filmmusicreporter.com , Bertelmann will compose the score for the film after delivering acclaimed work on Conclave , All Quiet on the Western Front , Dune: Prophecy , Adrift , Lion , The Day of the Jackal , A House of Dynamite , The Amateur , and One Life . He’s created some great scores, which makes him an exciting choice for a movie diving headfirst into body horror and psychological chaos. Bertelmann’s schedule is packed right now, too. His upcoming projects include Anthony Maras’ Pressure , which hits theaters this weekend, Antonin Baudry’s De Gaulle: Tilting Iron & The Sovereign Edge , arriving in French theaters over the next couple of months, and Michael Showalter’s Verity , which lands on October 2. The teaser trailer for Clayface gave fans a disturbing little taste of what’s coming. Set to The Flaming Lips’ “Do You Realize??,” the footage follows a bloodied and heavily bandaged Matt Hagen, played by Tom Rhys Harries , recovering in a hospital bed while horrific flashes reveal the violent attack that destroyed his face. From there, things get increasingly nightmarish. We see glimpses of Hagen’s grotesque transformation, including a creepy silhouette shot where his arm morphs into a giant spiked mace. The teaser wraps up with Hagen sitting in a bathtub, slowly wiping his own face away with his hand in one seriously unsettling image. It sounds like audiences should prepare for something very different from the usual comic book movie formula. James Gunn previously talked about how the project came together and why it immediately grabbed his attention. “Mike Flanagan is somebody who I've been friendly with for a long time, and he wrote me about Clayface. He texted me about it really early on in my DC journey. Just being honest, I did not think that was something that was going to happen, but he came in, and he pitched the idea, and I was like, 'Oh s---! That's cool.' “It's a body-horror movie. It's a horror movie that, like any cool body-horror movie, just happens to be in the DCU. And then he wrote the script, and the script was fantastic. We did not plan to do Clayface. That was really something he brought to us.” That horror-driven approach makes Clayface one of the most unique projects DC Studios has in development. The movie is being described as a horror thriller that follows a rising Hollywood actor whose life spirals into madness after a horrific transformation turns him into the iconic Gotham City monster. Alongside Harries, the cast includes Naomi Ackie , David Dencik , Max Minghella , Eddie Marsan , Nancy Carroll , and Joshua James . The film is directed by James Watkins from a screenplay written by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini , based on a story by Flanagan and characters from DC. Between Flanagan’s horror sensibilities, Watkins directing, and now Bertelmann handling the score, Clayface is shaping up to be one seriously creepy addition to the DCU.
