Did You Know?
Disney’s live‑action Moana lands on streaming – but does it capture the island spirit?
Disney’s latest cash‑grab remake of the beloved animated hit tries to ride the wave of live‑action nostalgia, but critics say it flounders. Director Thomas Kail and a youthful cast led by 19‑year‑old Catherine Laga'aia deliver performances that feel more at home on a Disney Channel sitcom than on a cinematic odyssey, with a bouncy, broad style that hints at a studio audience waiting in the wings.
The film leans heavily on CGI backdrops and a controversial Maui costume worn by Dwayne Johnson, which many reviewers describe as an "eyesore" that distracts rather than dazzles. The production’s polished veneer, they argue, feels more like an AI‑generated approximation than a heartfelt reinterpretation, missing the core of Moana’s journey of self‑discovery.
While the ensemble—including John Tui, Frankie Adams, and Rena Owen—does its best to honor the original, the overall effect is a shallow replica that approximates the look without capturing the soul. For fans curious to see how the live‑action version stacks up, Moana is now available to rent or buy on digital platforms.
Why the beloved pig Pua stays off‑screen in live‑action Moana
Director Thomas Kail revealed that the decision to keep Moana’s pet pig Pua on the sidelines wasn’t a snub but a storytelling choice. With limited screen time, the filmmakers prioritized Moana, Maui and the chaotic chicken Heihei, who offered "so many opportunities" for humor and tension‑relief. Kail noted that Pua’s intelligence would have solved problems too quickly, stealing the spotlight from the comedic chaos Heihei brings.
Heihei’s antics, from becoming Maui’s "dream meal" to his slapstick mishaps, were seen as essential mileage to amplify Maui’s larger‑than‑life personality. By focusing on the chicken’s silliness, the live‑action version aimed to keep the narrative tight while still delivering laughs, even if it meant Pua remained a background presence.
Fans who missed Pua’s adventure in the original 2016 animated film voiced disappointment, and the sequel released in 2024 finally gave the pig a spot on the boat and on promotional posters. While the live‑action adaptation, now streaming on Disney+, didn’t achieve blockbuster numbers, audience scores remain positive—though some still wish for a bit more porky charm alongside Dwayne Johnson’s signature hair.
