Did You Know?
Dinosaurs, divorce, and 1980s nostalgia collide in a wildly original suburban nightmare
Director David Robert Mitchell turns the ordinary into the extraordinary with "The End of Oak Street," blending classic Spielberg thrills—dinosaurs, kids in peril, and a crumbling marriage—into a fresh, 1982‑set adventure. The Platt family, led by Anne Hathaway’s Denise and Ewan McGregor’s Greg, seem poised for a quiet suburban split until a mysterious force catapults their entire neighborhood back to a prehistoric era where massive reptiles stalk the streets.
The film’s charm lies in its ability to stay grounded amid the absurdity. Mitchell lets audiences get to know the Platts’ strained dynamics before the chaos erupts, making every frantic chase feel personal. The dinosaur‑filled mayhem isn’t just a gimmick; it’s a visceral throwback to the Amblin vibe of the ’80s, delivering both nostalgic warmth and genuine terror.
Beyond the spectacle, "The End of Oak Street" doesn’t shy away from brutal moments—one particular scene leaves viewers literally jaw‑dropping. It proves that you can still explore dinosaur‑laden storytelling outside the Jurassic Park franchise, offering a gritty, humor‑tinged ride that feels both familiar and wildly inventive.
When a 1982 suburb is ripped into a dinosaur‑filled past, Anne Hathaway leads a family fight for survival.
David Robert Mitchell, the mind behind the cult horror hit “It Follows,” turns his lens to a wildly inventive sci‑fi thriller. In “The End of Oak Street,” the Platt family’s quiet Michigan cul‑de‑sac is suddenly yanked from 1982 and dropped into a prehistoric jungle teeming with massive Spinosaurus, forcing suburban parents and kids into a primal battle for survival.
Anne Hathaway stars as Denise Platt, an aspiring novelist thrust into the role of protector. The film marks Hathaway’s fourth major release of 2026, joining titles like “The Odyssey” and the upcoming “Verity.” She’s joined by rising talent Maisy Stella as daughter Audrey, Jordan Alexa Davis as neighbor Jeannette Christiansen, Emily Kuroda as librarian Mrs. Valcourt, and Hudson Meek as the feisty neighborhood kid Kaden Tucker.
Fans can stream the movie on all major VOD platforms, with Amazon Prime offering a free‑account rental option: you have 30 days to start watching and a 48‑hour window once you press play. The release strategy reflects a growing preference for digital access while still acknowledging collectors who worry about rights revocation.
Visually, the film blends high‑octane car chases with cutting‑edge creature effects, delivering a fresh take on the prehistoric adventure genre. Critics are already noting its striking mix of family drama and dinosaur‑scale terror, positioning “The End of Oak Street” as a bold new entry in Mitchell’s eclectic filmography.
A 1980s suburb turned Jurassic playground—why ‘The End of Oak Street’ is the dinosaur movie you didn’t know you needed.
Critics are already dubbing ‘The End of Oak Street’ the best dinosaur film since Spielberg’s 1990s classic, and it’s easy to see why. The movie delivers a chaotic, fun‑filled adventure that feels like an effortless summer blockbuster, earning a solid 4‑out‑of‑5 star review for its blend of thrills and humor.
Set against the nostalgic backdrop of a 1980s Michigan neighborhood, the story takes a wild turn when the entire suburb is catapulted millions of years into the past. Suddenly, dinosaurs roam the streets, forcing the Platt family—played by Ewan McGregor and Anne Hathaway—to confront more than just prehistoric predators. Caught in the middle of a divorce, the couple must set aside their differences if they hope to keep their family safe.
The film’s premise—ordinary suburban life colliding with a prehistoric nightmare—offers a fresh spin on the dinosaur genre, steering clear of the usual animated fare or Jurassic Park branding. With its mix of family drama, high‑octane action, and a dash of 80s flair, it promises a uniquely entertaining ride.
‘The End of Oak Street’ is now available for purchase or rent on Amazon and Apple, making it an easy pick for anyone looking to add a roaring adventure to their weekend streaming lineup.
Dinosaurs invade suburbia and the movie tops home‑viewing charts
The End of Oak Street has become America’s No. 1 home‑viewing film, holding the top spot on the Apple TV Store’s U.S. movie chart for six straight days since its September 15 digital debut. Its rapid climb underscores a hungry audience for fresh creature‑feature thrills beyond the usual streaming fare.
Directed by David Robert Mitchell, the sci‑fi survival thriller drops a 1982 American neighborhood straight into the Cretaceous period, forcing the Platt family and their entire block to fend for food, water, and safety against literal dinosaurs. By swapping the familiar theme‑park setting of Jurassic Park for an ordinary suburban street, the film delivers a bonkers, high‑stakes survival story that feels both familiar and startlingly new.
Anne Hathaway (Denise Platt) and Ewan McGregor (Greg Platt) lead an ensemble that includes Maisy Stella, Christian Convery and a host of supporting players, all praised by critics for their commitment to the frantic, family‑driven drama. The dinosaur work, lauded as a triumph of the animal trainers, pairs with Mitchell’s old‑fashioned creature‑feature style to earn the movie an excellent rating and a place in IMAX‑ready releases, cementing its status as a standout entry in the dinosaur genre.
Abrams’ $800 million sci‑fi gamble lands far short of the box office
J.J. Abrams has stepped back into the science‑fiction arena after a seven‑year hiatus, this time as producer of the original film The End of Oak Street. Directed by David Robert Mitchell and starring Joel Courtney, Elle Fanning, Gabriel Basso and Kyle Chandler, the movie was lauded for its atmospheric tone and narrative ambition, yet its $800 million production cost dwarfed the roughly $120 million it earned worldwide.
Steven Spielberg’s fingerprints are evident throughout the project, from budgetary backing to creative guidance. The story—an idyllic town rattled by a string of unexplained disappearances—channels classic Spielbergian storytelling into a contemporary setting, giving the film an artistic pedigree that critics praised even as the numbers fell flat.
The financial gap becomes starker when compared to Spielberg’s own 2022 sci‑fi thriller, a leaner $50 million venture that more than doubled its budget at the global box office. That contrast highlights two divergent approaches: Spielberg’s tighter production pipeline and nostalgic nods versus Abrams’ expansive, high‑concept vision that struggled to find a commercial foothold.
Industry analysts see Abrams’ return as a cautionary tale, suggesting future high‑concept projects may need stricter budget discipline and a blend of franchise and original material to stay viable. As the market swells with genre content, the balance between artistic ambition and profitability will remain the defining challenge for Hollywood’s next sci‑fi endeavors.
J.J. Abrams’ surprise sci‑fi comeback lands a mixed‑bag at the box office
After a seven‑year hiatus from the genre, J.J. Abrams stepped back into sci‑fi as a producer with the original film The End of Oak Street. Directed by David Robert Mitchell, the movie was crafted as a love letter to Steven Spielberg’s classic adventures, even earning the legendary director a producer credit.
The film earned praise from critics but stumbled commercially, pulling in roughly $120 million worldwide against an $80 million budget. Its theatrical run was modest, and it’s now available for a limited window on Paramount+ before disappearing from the platform.
Spielberg, whom Abrams cites as a mentor, helped shepherd the project while the cast—Joel Courtney, Elle Fanning, Gabriel Basso, and Kyle Chandler—brought the eerie small‑town mystery of unexplained disappearances to life. The modest earnings stand in stark contrast to a comparable sci‑fi effort that doubled its gross on a $50 million budget, highlighting the thin line between cult admiration and box‑office success.
