The Love Hypothesis (2026)

Lili Reinhart is literally “30, flirty and thriving” as she rolls out the press tour for the upcoming adaptation of Ali Hazelwood’s bestselling novel The Love Hypothesis. The Riverdale star just hit the big three‑zero on September 13, and she’s marked the milestone with a wardrobe salute to one of the early‑2000s rom‑com classics. For the latest promotional still, Reinhart’s stylist Ib Abdel Nasser sourced the exact Nanette Lepore pink coat that Jennifer Garner strutted in 13 Going on 30, pairing it with a darker mini dress and bold purple heels—a twist on the original silver‑shoeed ensemble. The look sits alongside a series of romance‑coded outfits she’s worn on the tour, each echoing beloved films from How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days to Ever After. Fans are taking the homage as a promising sign that The Love Hypothesis aims to sit alongside those beloved romance movies. The film, based on Hazelwood’s novel, is set to stream on Amazon Prime on September 23, and early reactions to the adaptation have been “stellar,” according to the article. With Reinhart’s method‑dressing and the perfect birthday‑themed nod, the romance‑filled anticipation is officially in full swing.

What began as a wildly popular Rey‑Kylo fanfic on AO3—one of nearly 32,000"fix‑its" to the infamous ship—was reimagined by neuroscience professor‑turned‑author Ali Hazelwood as a Stanford post‑doc romance. Renamed Dr. Adam Carlsen and Olive Smith, the novel exploded into a 2021 bestseller, joining a rare handful of fan‑origin stories to break into mainstream publishing. The book’s leap to the screen landed on Prime Video on September 23, with Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman leading the cast under the direction of Claire Scanlon, now optioned by Legendary. Scanlon and producer Cantillon note that streaming has become a haven for rom‑coms that theaters have sidelined for superhero and horror fare, allowing stories like this to find a hungry audience. Fans of the original Reylo pairing will spot deliberate Easter eggs: composer Laura Karpman weaves a motif that nods to John Williams’ Kylo Ren march, and the film opens with Gracie Abrams’"Mess It Up"—a nod to the social‑media buzz demanding the track. Even the casting conversation hinted at the meta‑connection, with jokes about Daisy Ridley, Kylo’s on‑screen love, being married to Tom Bateman. Scanlon also promised a mature, adult‑focused treatment. The infamous steamy Chapter 16 was expanded, filmed through a female gaze, and set against a score that underscores the protagonists as elite scientists, not teenage love interests. The director hopes this approach will signal a shift, encouraging future romances to embrace real stakes and intimacy.

Prime Video’s latest rom‑com, The Love Hypothesis, is more than a fresh adaptation of Ali Hazelwood’s New York Times bestseller. The novel began life as a Reylo (Rey/Kylo Ren) fanfiction, and the production leans into that lineage: screenwriter Sarah Rothschild and director Claire Scanlon pepper the film with nods, most visibly in Tom Bateman’s all‑black wardrobe. The meta‑twist deepens when Bateman, who’s married to Daisy Ridley—the actress that now plays Rey—steps into the role originally inspired by Adam Driver’s Sith Lord. The story follows PhD candidate Olive Smith (Lili Reinhart), a driven Stanford researcher still grieving her mother’s death and racing to secure funding for cancer‑detection work. When her best friend Anh (Rachel Marsh) hesitates to pursue a crush on Jeremy, Olive invents a fake boyfriend to defuse the tension. Enter Dr. Adam Carlsen (Tom Bateman), the campus “Dr. Evil” whose own grant hinges on appearing settled. Their mutually beneficial charade spirals into genuine feelings, even as they scramble to convince everyone their romance is real. Reinhart’s sweet‑but‑sharp Olive shines thanks to razor‑sharp comedic timing, while Bateman gradually peels back Adam’s rigid façade to reveal unexpected depth. Their chemistry evolves from a clever comedy duo into a believable romance, carrying the film through a third act that, while a bit tangled, can’t dim the overall delight. In a rom‑com renaissance, The Love Hypothesis stands out for its clever origins, heartfelt performances, and the way it turns a fake‑dating trope into something genuinely charming.

Adapted from Ali Hazelwood’s BookTok‑famous novel, The Love Hypothesis follows Stanford PhD candidate Olive Smith (Lili Reinhart) as she engineers a fake romance with the intimidating Dr. Adam Carlsen (Tom Bateman) to help a friend’s love life. The film leans into literal chemistry—Olive’s research on pancreatic cancer and the chemistry lab scenes echo the fizzy, elephant‑toothpaste experiment that frames the story’s tone. Director Claire Scanlon (Set It Up) preserves fan‑favorite details, from Olive’s unicorn socks in the steamy Chapter 16 night to the cringe‑worthy coffee‑shop date where Olive’s forced laughter meets Adam’s dead‑pan precision. Reinhart balances Olive’s klutzy charm with a deeper drive to prove herself, while Bateman’s clipped delivery makes Adam’s rare soft moments all the more striking. Their chemistry fuels the classic fake‑dating trope, turning a strategic kiss into a partnership that could secure Adam’s research funding. Despite the lively performances and faithful nods to the source material, the romance stalls where it should sizzle: yearning. The film skirts the pivotal moment when the duo realizes their feelings might be real, a beat that usually injects angst and stakes into a fake‑dating story. Without that longing, the connection feels more like a fun experiment than a lasting reaction, leaving fans of the novel wishing for a stronger emotional catalyst.

Tom Bateman steps into the role of Dr. Adam Carlsen in Prime Video’s adaptation of Ali Hazlewood’s bestseller The Love Hypothesis – a film that secretly nods to his wife’s iconic Rey. The novel began life as a Rey‑Kylo fan‑fiction, and while the published book stripped most overt references, the professor’s first name, Adam, pays homage to Adam Driver, and Bateman’s own name appears on a villainous character. Bateman laughed that the connection was “so out there” when he learned of it, noting the serendipity of being cast in a story that grew from his partner’s galaxy‑far‑away fandom. When the casting news went viral on TikTok, Bateman realized the film’s fan‑fic roots and admitted he initially thought the director meant Hazlewood’s love of Star Wars sparked her writing. He’s since embraced the meta‑story, calling the press “fun” and proudly championing Ridley’s beloved character during a Vanity Fair Lie Detector Test. Ridley, for her part, called the situation “sweet” and has been actively promoting the movie on Instagram, turning a private inside joke into public excitement. The couple’s own romance reads like a screenplay of its own. They first met on the set of Murder on the Orient Express in November 2016, weathered early rumors in 2017, and were spotted hand‑in‑hand at a London farmer’s market in 2018. By late 2019, Ridley was seen wearing a diamond ring, and Bateman appeared with a gold band in 2020. Their collaboration deepened when Ridley announced a thriller, Magpie, written by Bateman in 2022, and she confirmed they were married in a 2023 Rolling Stone interview. Since then, they’ve made joint red‑carpet appearances at SXSW and Paris Fashion Week, cementing their reputation as Hollywood’s “happiest married people.” Beyond the Easter egg‑laden rom‑com, the pair’s creative partnership continues to flourish. Bateman praised Ridley as one of his “favorite actors” while discussing the script for Magpie, and Ridley has repeatedly highlighted how their personal chemistry translates to on‑screen magic. As The Love Hypothesis rolls out, fans can enjoy not just a fresh fake‑dating story, but a real‑life love story that started with a galaxy‑far‑away fanfic and blossomed into a Hollywood partnership.

Ali Hazelwood’s bestselling romance didn’t start as a college‑campus love story at all – it began as a Reylo fanfiction pairing Star Wars’ Rey and Kylo Ren. After reworking the tale into ‘The Love Hypothesis’, the novel’s leads Olive and Adam emerged, setting the stage for a surprising cinematic twist. When Prime Video began casting, Tom Bateman’s name raised eyebrows because he’s married to Daisy Ridley, the actress who embodied Rey. Director Claire Scanlon clarified that the marriage wasn’t a factor in his hiring; instead, Bateman simply matched Hazelwood’s description of Adam and sparked instant chemistry with Lili Reinhart during auditions. That on‑screen spark, she says, sealed his role. The Ridley connection quickly became a beloved Easter egg for Star Wars fans, a nod that Scanlon says delighted many viewers. She also slipped additional, subtle Star Wars references into the film, rewarding attentive audiences. If you haven’t seen the adaptation yet, the layered nods and the behind‑the‑scenes story make it worth a binge on Prime Video.
