Lena Headey Opens Up About Her Scrapped THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER Role and the Wild Witch Storyline We Never Saw
Even though she never appeared on screen, Lena Headey has finally revealed the role she played in Thor: Love and Thunder before it was cut from the film. The Game of Thrones star was originally set to be part of a strange and comedic storyline that didn’t make it into the final version. When fans first heard that Headey had joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it sparked a lot of excitement. Seeing someone who commanded the screen the way she did in Game of Thrones step into a cosmic Marvel story felt like a perfect match. That excitement didn’t exactly carry through to the final product, though, as Thor: Love and Thunder landed with mixed reactions and left plenty of fans wanting something closer to the tone of the comics. Now, in a recent interview, Headey has finally shed light on what she was supposed to bring to the film, and it sounds like it would’ve added a completely different flavor to Thor’s journey. She shared:"I wasn't in it, but I worked on it. There were three of us. We were [a] coven of witches. I think it was Taika's invention, and they were kind of Thor's guide in the underworld, but they were very, very funny and kind of insane. I think there was this whole story of like, 'They got fired,' when actually it was just like, 'What are they doing here?'" A trio of chaotic witches guiding Thor through the underworld feels like something straight out of a bizarre fantasy side quest, which honestly fits the unpredictable tone director Taika Waititi leaned into. Headey didn’t go into the experience with any bitterness either. In fact, she spoke warmly about her co-stars and the overall vibe of the project, even if it never made it to audiences."But I think the intention was to find this land for them to have their own adventures. It was myself, Angus Sampson, and Da'Vine Joy, so it was quite a trio of madness. We were witches. Oh, she's a delight. She is a joy. She is a divine joy. So yeah, bummer that we didn't make the cut." The idea that this witch coven was entirely original and not pulled from Marvel Comics makes it even more interesting. It sounds like a quirky detour that either could’ve been a fun addition or just added to the film’s already crowded tone. Waititi has previously addressed why so many cameos and scenes were cut from Thor: Love and Thunder , saying:"If you ask any of those actors who were cut out — Jeff Goldblum, Lena Headey, Peter Dinklage — they all understand how it works. They have been in the game long enough. But that’s just the way I look at things.""I’m not going to give you a moment because this is my way of telling you, like, people say, 'I can’t wait for the deleted scenes with those actors.' I don’t want people to see the deleted scenes because they’re deleted for a reason: They aren’t good enough. The scenes were not in the movie and that’s it." Love it or hate it, that approach definitely explains why we’ve never seen this sequence surface anywhere. Even with its divisive reception, Thor: Love and Thunder still pulled in $760.9 million worldwide, which isn’t a small number by any stretch. It fell short of Thor: Ragnarok , but in a post-pandemic landscape, it still performed solidly. Looking ahead, Thor’s story isn’t over. The character is set to return in Avengers: Doomsday , and there’s already talk of another standalone Thor film. This time, though, Waititi won’t be back in the director’s chair, which could mean a tonal shift closer to what fans have been asking for. As for Headey’s witch? That chapter is probably closed for good. But hearing about it now makes you wonder what kind of weird, chaotic energy that trio might have brought to the MCU.
